KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE CLASSES

K-1st Language Arts with Shannon Van De Vanter

This engaging language arts class will help young learners build a strong foundation in reading and writing using the curriculum from The Good and the Beautiful program. Lessons are designed to nurture a love of learning through beautiful literature, interactive activities, and gentle skill-building.

Students will practice important early literacy skills such as letter recognition, phonics, beginning reading, handwriting, spelling, and basic grammar. Through stories, games, and hands-on activities, students will develop confidence in their reading and writing abilities while strengthening listening and communication skills.

This class encourages curiosity, creativity, and a love for books while helping students develop the foundational language arts skills needed for future learning.

K-1st Art with Rebecca Newell

In this fun and creative art class, young artists will explore famous works of art from throughout history and discover the unique styles of different artists. After learning about each piece of artwork, students will create their own projects inspired by the style, colors, and techniques of the artist we are studying.

Students will have the opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of art materials and mediums, including chalk pastels, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic paints, and more. Each lesson encourages creativity, imagination, and self-expression while helping students build confidence in their artistic abilities.

Through hands-on projects and playful exploration, students will develop basic art skills while learning that art is a wonderful way to express ideas, tell stories, and see the world in new ways. This class is designed to nurture creativity and help every child feel like an artist. 🎨

K-1st Science (Earth Science) with Wendy Yen

In this engaging science class, kindegarten and first-grade students will explore the wonders of Earth through hands-on experiments, observation, and interactive activities. Using the curriculum from Pandia Press and their Real Science Odyssey: Earth and Environment 1 program, as well as other material, students will be introduced to the basic systems that make up our planet.

Throughout the course, students will learn about topics such as rocks and soil, water, weather, landforms, and Earth’s natural resources. Lessons encourage curiosity as students ask questions, make predictions, and explore the world around them through simple investigations and projects.

Students will practice important scientific skills including observing, recording information, and discussing their discoveries. Hands-on activities help bring science concepts to life while building a foundation for future scientific learning.

This class is designed to nurture curiosity about the natural world while helping students develop a love for science through exploration and discovery.

K-1st Math with Shannon Van De Vanter

Lessons are designed to make learning math enjoyable through hands-on activities, games, stories, and visual learning.

Students will practice essential early math concepts such as number recognition, counting, addition and subtraction, patterns, shapes, place value, and basic problem-solving. The curriculum also introduces beginning concepts in measurement, time, and money while strengthening logical thinking skills.

K-1st Outdoor Explorers with Shannon Van De Vanter

Outdoor Explorers will focus on sports and group games involving imagination, physical activity and skills.  Children will be encouraged to connect with nature and enhance team building while bonding in the great outdoors (some days will be spent at the beach learning about ocean life and all its beautiful wonders).

Parents must complete an off campus wavier.

In this combined yoga and gardening class, students will enjoy movement, mindfulness, and hands-on learning in a playful outdoor environment. During yoga, children will increase focus, flexibility, and strength while developing body awareness and a connection to their breath through fun and engaging activities.

In gardening, students will explore plant life cycles, discover plant diversity, and learn about the interdependence between plants and humans. They will help plant and care for the Hub garden boxes and tend to the worm bin to enrich the soil for our garden. Dirt doesn’t hurt, and worms don’t either!

This class encourages curiosity, creativity, and a love for nature while helping students develop healthy habits, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility for the environment.

K-1st Social Studies (Me on the Map) with Wendy Yen

In this engaging social studies class, students will begin to explore the world around them and their place in it. Students will learn about maps, globes, continents, countries, states, and local communities in a fun and interactive way.

Students will also explore community helpers and important figures from history, learning how people contribute to their communities and the impact historical individuals have had on the world. Through hands-on activities, stories, and discussions, students will practice identifying locations, understanding directions, and recognizing important landmarks.

This class encourages curiosity, spatial thinking, and an awareness of how people, places, and communities are connected. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger sense of geography, a deeper understanding of community roles and history, and the excitement to continue exploring beyond their classroom.

2nd-3rd Songwriting Class with Rheanna Downey

  • Students need their own ukulele or guitar.
  • No previous experience needed

All ukulele players, guitarists, and vocalists are welcome in this creative and collaborative class focused on the art of songwriting. Students will use their musical and writing skills to learn how songs are created, exploring the process from inspiration to finished piece.

Throughout the course, students will learn the fundamentals of songwriting including chord progressions, rhythm, song structure, melody, and basic music theory. We will also explore how lyrics are written by choosing themes as a class and using creative prompts to spark ideas and inspiration.

This class balances creativity with structure, helping students develop the discipline and skills needed to turn ideas into original songs. Students will have opportunities to share their work, collaborate with others, and grow in confidence as musicians and writers.

2nd-3rd Song and Dance with Caryn Hall

Join Ms. Caryn for a lively and fun-filled Song and Dance class! Each hour-long session includes a 20-minute jazz-based warm-up, followed by a 20-minute technique series focusing on turns, leaps, and other foundational dance skills. The class then moves into learning full dance numbers that combine music and movement.

Students will explore a variety of styles, including hip hop, jazz, ethnic dance, and even line dancing, all while building coordination, rhythm, and confidence. This class is a joyful opportunity to express creativity, develop dance technique, and have fun moving to music.

Come ready to dance, sing, and explore the joy of performance!

2nd-3rd Drama with Rebecca Newell

This is an engaging introductory drama class designed for students to explore acting, creativity, and stagecraft. During the first two weeks of the semester, students participate in fun warm-up games and improvisational exercises to build confidence, teamwork, and performance skills.

Next, the class selects a play suited to the group. Students take part in a class read-through, choose their top character picks, and participate in in-class auditions. The remainder of the semester is dedicated to play practice and set design, giving students hands-on experience in bringing a production to life.

Two mandatory after-school rehearsals lead up to the final performance, where students showcase their hard work, creativity, and newfound acting skills. This class is perfect for students who want to develop confidence, collaboration, and a love for the theater.

2nd-3rd “Who was …..” Biography Book Study with Wendy Yen

In this course, students will dive into the lives of fascinating historical figures, from inventors and scientists to artists and leaders. Through engaging discussions, interactive activities, and creative projects, students will discover the stories behind these remarkable individuals and their contributions to the world.

Throughout the year, students will explore different “Who Was” biographies, delving into the lives and accomplishments of iconic figures. Last year, we learned about Dr. Seuss, Frank Sinatra, Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Rosa Parks, and Benjamin Franklin. Book choices will be selected to connect with learning in other courses taken at the Hub, as well as based on class interest. Through guided reading sessions and group discussions, students will learn about the challenges these individuals faced, the achievements they made, and the impact they had on the world.

In addition to reading and discussing the biographies, students will participate in hands-on activities and projects inspired by the lives of the featured historical figures.

Through this book study, students will develop a deeper understanding of history while enhancing their reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, and creativity. By the end of the course, students will have a greater appreciation for the diverse individuals who have shaped our world and an understanding of their own potential to make a difference. 2nd-3rd Grade Poetry and Figurative Language Class with Milly Haynes

This beginner poetry course introduces students to reading, analyzing, and appreciating a variety of poems while helping them develop their own poetic writing skills. Students will explore the beauty of figurative language, including simile, metaphor, personification, and alliteration, and learn how these elements enhance expression and imagery in poetry.

Through guided reading, discussion, and creative writing exercises, students will practice crafting their own poems, experimenting with style, voice, and language. This course encourages creativity, self-expression, and a deeper understanding of how words can convey meaning and emotion.

2nd-3rd Grade Math Games and STEM Challenges with Wendy Yen

This class is designed to make learning math engaging and interactive through games and hands-on activities. Students will play a variety of favorite math games, including ZEUS on the Loose, Racko, Jump 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, Farkle, Blokus, ADSUMUDI, and Bingo. These games help reinforce math skills while encouraging teamwork and friendly competition.

In addition, students will participate in hands-on STEM projects designed to foster creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. This class combines fun, exploration, and learning to give students a well-rounded experience in math and STEM concepts.

2nd-3rd Cooking from around the World with Rebecca Newell, Milly Haynes, and Shannon Van De Vanter

Students will learn a little history and geography while cooking up a storm. This class will explore both sweet and savory dishes from countries and cultures around the world and even back-in-time. Our chefs will learn how to read recipes, maintain a clean workspace, and practice safe cooking. The goal is to foster a love for cooking and above all else, have a wonderful time.

FOURTH, FIFTH, and SIXTH GRADE CLASSES

4th-6th Chemistry with Wendy Yen

In this hands-on science class, students will explore the fascinating world of chemistry through experiments, observation, and interactive activities. Using the curriculum from Pandia Press and their Real Science Odyssey: Chemistry 1 program, students will be introduced to the basic building blocks of matter and how substances interact.

Throughout the course, students will investigate topics such as atoms and molecules, states of matter, mixtures and solutions, chemical reactions, acids and bases, and the periodic table. Lessons are designed to encourage curiosity and scientific thinking as students ask questions, make predictions, and test ideas through hands-on experiments.

Students will practice important scientific skills including observation, recording data, forming hypotheses, and drawing conclusions. Activities and labs will help bring chemistry concepts to life while strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This engaging class is designed to make chemistry approachable and fun while helping students build a strong foundation in scientific inquiry and laboratory exploration.

Students must purchase a R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey student notebook, purchased directly from Pandia Press.

4th-6th+ Creative Story Writing with Milly Haynes

This course is designed to introduce students to the rich world of fables, folktales, myths and legends while developing their story writing skills. Students will explore the characteristics of these differing literary genres, analyze classic examples and create their own original stories to (optionally) present to peers!

4th-6th+ Drawing, Painting and Ceramics with Pete Liapes 
  • Tuesday’s 12:30-2:30pm $640/semester (Cash or Check)
  • $60 additional material fee

In this creative art class, students will explore both drawing, painting and ceramics, developing artistic skills while expressing their imagination. Through drawing, students will practice techniques such as line, shape, color, and shading, learning to bring their ideas to life on paper.

In ceramics, students will work with clay to create sculptures, pottery, and other three-dimensional projects. They will learn hand-building techniques, basic shaping, and finishing methods while experimenting with texture, form, and design.

This hands-on class encourages creativity, problem-solving, and patience, giving students the opportunity to see their ideas grow from sketches to finished three-dimensional art. Students will leave the class with a stronger sense of artistic confidence, craftsmanship, and pride in their work.

4th-6th Biz Town! with Wendy Yen

  • Wednesdays 9:00am-10:00am (PCA, Element Education, SoCal, Elite vendor, Venmo @Wendy-Yen-1)
  • $35 Field Trip Fee

In BizTown, students will learn how a community and economy work together through hands-on activities and real-world simulations. Throughout the course, students will explore basic financial literacy, entrepreneurship, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Students will learn about earning income, budgeting, saving, spending, and making responsible financial decisions. They will also explore how businesses operate, including product creation, marketing, customer service, and teamwork within a company.

As a culmination of this course, students will participate in a 4.5-hour hands-on field trip to JA BizTown in Mission Valley, where they will take part in a real-world simulation of running a city. Students will step into roles such as business owners, employees, and consumers while managing budgets, making financial decisions, and working as a team to keep the town running. The date for this field trip will be announced later.

Please note that there will be a $35 field trip fee associated with this experience. I will also need several volunteers to help drive and facilitate the experience.

This engaging, project-based class encourages creativity, collaboration, and leadership while helping students build practical life skills they can use beyond the classroom.

Depending on the weather and planned activities, students will either walk down to Moonlight Beach or stay at the Hub for an active and fun-filled session. Participants will explore a variety of games and physical activities including beach soccer, wiffle ball, kickball, GAGA ball, volleyball, tag, sprints, relays, dodgeball, and other outdoor games.

This class encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness while giving students the chance to enjoy the outdoors, stay active, and have fun with friends.
